Caring for your Vehicle

Long-Lasting Vehicle-Tips

Everyone knows it’s important to keep up with the basics of car care so that it doesn’t add up to big and costly problems. It is more important for older models as well. It can become expensive to take it to a mechanic for an issue you can take care of on your own. CheatSheet has come up with a few things you can do to keep your older car running for as long as possible.

Care and Maintenance

If you have had your vehicle for a long time, chances are that you've taken care of it and don't really need tips. But if you just bought a used car for yourself or for your child, it is in your best interest to familiarise yourself with the different quirks that it can have. Luckily, when it comes to used vehicles, there is a plethora of information from current and former owners on the internet nowadays. Taking the time to look at this info can hopefully save you some heartache in the long run.

A healthy car starts with clean oil. Keeping up with regular oil changes will save you a ton on maintenance fees. Take it to a mechanic or if you’re ready to enter the world of DIY auto repairs, check your owner's manual for recommended oil type and get your hands dirty. Your car's engine gets extremely hot which is why it has a cooling system. Making sure the antifreeze is topped off and there are no leaks will help keep your vehicle on the road a lot longer. The air filter is another easily accessed integral part of your engine that needs routine maintenance.  The timing belt or chain is pivotal in a car running smoothly. When a timing belt or chain slips or breaks, it can cause a cascade of trouble. Depending on your car, the chain or belt will need to be replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. It's sometimes costly to change, but after you get it done you won’t have to worry about it for a while.

The Usual Stuff

There is always going to be some company out there that promises a product that can make your engine faster, stronger, and more powerful as it gets older. Yeah, it’s too good to be true. Just stick with what works, don’t make things complicated and expensive. Vehicle inspections are great. Getting a fresh pair of eyes to go over your vehicle can pay off in the long run. Having issues pop up out of the blue is dangerous for you and other drivers. Old engines burn oil, so keep an eye on it and look out for leaks. Investing in quality wheels, tires, and brakes will keep you from spending more in the long run. Cheap tires wear faster, or unevenly, throwing your car’s suspension out of whack and causing wear-and-tear on vital components. This rule also applies to replaceable things like wheels and brakes. Driving your vehicle can help keep the fluids pumping. Park an old car for a while, and chances are you’ll start experiencing problems, so keep it moving. Sometimes an entire engine or transmission replacement is the way to go. It can breathe new life in your old car.

Below are a few myths and facts that you may have wondered about, such as types of car soap, supplies, and other topics. This or That There might have come a time that you were out of car soap or heard from someone that dish detergent will clean your car. Well, it would CLEAN your vehicle, but dish detergent will actually speed up oxidation on the paint, and it will lead to a degradation of the paint job. A shiny car isn’t necessarily a clean car. To honestly know if your vehicle is clean, you should feel the paint to see if it feels glossy and not coarse. If it feels more like sandpaper, then the car isn’t clean, a...
