SELF DRIVING CARS
Popular Mechanics- If you were like me growing up, the future looked like an episode of The Jetsons. As a kid, I thought the future what going to bring us talking watches, self-cooking ovens that prepare entire meals, closets that dress us at the push of a button, and of course flying cars. Well, we are not that far off. At the moment there is a possibility that we will see self-driving vehicles on our roads. This possibility has been on the horizon for the past few years, as companies like Tesla and Waymo have been focused on bringing autonomous vehicles to the market. In 2017, the U.S. House passed legislation that could accelerate the development of self-driving cars by allowing them to be driven in all 50 states.
The Safely Ensuring Lives Future Deployment and Research In Vehicle Evolution Act (SELF DRIVE) exempts automakers from some safety standards that aren't relevant to autonomous vehicles and permits selling up to 25,000 cars per year without needing to meet current auto safety standards. That cap would increase to 100,000 over the next three years. It would block states from banning the technology as well as keep states from passing unnecessary restrictive legislation leaving automakers with the right to experiment.
There are some out there that worried about safety and potential risks. The California-based advocacy group Consumer Watchdog said in a statement that "The autonomous vehicle bill just passed by the House leaves a wild west without adequate safety protections for consumers."
The Senate debated a similar version of this bill, and it's likely that a combined version will end up on the President's desk sometime. Hey, if this bill passes, we may be getting closer to the future I imagined and see self-driving vehicles all across the U.S. Let’s hope we are ready for them.
