A Memorable Journey to Singapore

Land Rover- In 1955, six undergraduates from Cambridge embarked on an impossible journey. This expedition would take these men halfway around the world on rough terrain, from the English Channel to Singapore. One of the men, Tim Slessor, tells of how the trip came together.

How it All Came Together

Like most college undergraduates, these men had no money and no car, but late one night Slessor came to Adrian Cowell’s room for a nightcap. Cowell started dreaming- out loud. “How about putting together an expedition to drive to Singapore? Crazy? Maybe. But why not? After all, no one else had done it. We could be the first.”After a long night of planning a route and figuring mileages, a team came together.
The team comprised of cameraman Antony Barrington Brown (best known to the men as BB), Henry Nott, secretary of the University Motor Club, Pat Murphy, navigator and visa-negotiating diplomat, and Nigel Newbery who became their quartermaster and second mechanic. Now they needed two vehicles that could handle the unpredictable terrain. Cowell set out in search of sponsorship and reached out to the Rover Company at first with a letter explaining their capabilities of pulling off this adventure and then with a visit to Birmingham. Cowell proposed that if they don’t make the first “overland to Singapore” journey, the publicity for Rover would be, considerable. Days later Rover wrote a response to Cowell and gave the men two vehicles that could make the journey.

I Think He Forgot Something So this is funny. But according to nwitimes.com , a 33-year-old suspect made his getaway after robbing a convenience store but didn't get far. The guy had robbed a LaCrosse gas station after he informed the store clerk he had a gun. The suspect, Sean Harris, made off with food, beverage items, and cigarettes… but no money! I guess the guy was super hungry since the report stated he had a blood alcohol level higher than the limit for legally operating a motor vehicle. Harris fled the gas station, with whatever he could carry, when an Indiana State Police trooper came upon the getaway car. Not in some crazy high-speed chase, or from using some awesome spy satellite that Vin Diesel uses in all his action films. NOPE! Harris’ vehicle ran out of gas.
