A Memorable Journey to Singapore

A Memorable Journey to Singapore

Land Rover- In 1955, six undergraduates from Cambridge embarked on an impossible journey. This expedition would take these men halfway around the world on rough terrain, from the English Channel to Singapore. One of the men, Tim Slessor, tells of how the trip came together.

How it All Came Together

Like most college undergraduates, these men had no money and no car, but late one night Slessor came to Adrian Cowell’s room for a nightcap. Cowell started dreaming- out loud. “How about putting together an expedition to drive to Singapore? Crazy? Maybe. But why not? After all, no one else had done it. We could be the first.”After a long night of planning a route and figuring mileages, a team came together.
The team comprised of cameraman Antony Barrington Brown (best known to the men as BB), Henry Nott, secretary of the University Motor Club, Pat Murphy, navigator and visa-negotiating diplomat, and Nigel Newbery who became their quartermaster and second mechanic. Now they needed two vehicles that could handle the unpredictable terrain. Cowell set out in search of sponsorship and reached out to the Rover Company at first with a letter explaining their capabilities of pulling off this adventure and then with a visit to Birmingham. Cowell proposed that if they don’t make the first “overland to Singapore” journey, the publicity for Rover would be, considerable. Days later Rover wrote a response to Cowell and gave the men two vehicles that could make the journey.

Another one of those responsibilities is keeping your vehicle clean, inside and out. With so many products and car care advice out there, it can be hard to pick what is right for your vehicle. Below are a few myths and facts that you may have wondered about, such as types of car soap, supplies, and other topics. This or That There might have come a time that you were out of car soap or heard from someone that dish detergent will clean your car. Well, it would CLEAN your vehicle, but dish detergent will actually speed up oxidation on the paint, and it will lead to a degradation of the paint job. A shiny car isn’t necessarily a clean car. To honestly know if your vehicle is clean, you should feel the paint to see if it feels glossy and not coarse. If it feels more like sandpaper, then the car isn’t clean, a...
