Avoiding Wildlife on the Road
Everyone likes taking a drive or going on a trip. But there are several cautions to be taken while on the road. Other drivers, distractions happening inside your vehicle, debris on the road, and wildlife can cause serious accidents. But luckily there are ways to avoid these distractions, especially wildlife. Wildlife animals on the road are unpredictable and unexpected, experiencing them can be scary and costly. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety from 1975 to the mid-2000s, there was a general upward trend in deaths from collisions with animals. While wildlife animals are highly active during certain times of the year, they can still be hazardous year-round and precautions should be taken at all times. There are several tips to help you avoid collisions with wildlife and other animals like domestic pets.Tips to Keep You Safe
Avoid Peak Hours- Wildlife is active at dusk and dawn so it would be best to stay off the road at those times.Use Your High-Beam Headlights- You can spot wildlife sooner when using your high-beams and helping you slow down, move over, or honk your horn.
Deer Travel in Herds- If you see one deer, there most likely will be more. Slow down and keep an eye out for more.
Use the Center Lane- If possible, us the center lane to give room between you and deer grazing on the side of the road.
Try to Stay in Control- If a collision is unavoidable, do your best to stay calm and in control of your vehicle. It is best that you try not to swerve, it could cause a more serious crash and injuries.
And Don’t Forget- Always wear your seatbelt, don’t drive sleepy, and always drive sober.
