How Are Your Car Tires Made
I’ll be honest, I’m one of those people who stay up at night wondering how things work or are made. One night it was safety pins, the other was how a fax machine works. One of those things I was wondering was how vehicle tires were made. I know it seems silly, but luckily we have the tools to find out how. There is no doubt that tires are the most important part of your car. These four parts touch the ground, make the car accelerate, and what other car part do you keep a spare of. Having your tires in the best shape/working condition can ensure your safety and those around you. But how are these important part made? According to Michelin, it is a complex process, and there are steps into this making process.
- They do their research. They study peoples tire usage and driving habits.
- There are over 200 ingredients/materials that go into a tire. The components fall into five groups:
-Synthetic rubber: part of the treads of car, van and 4x4 tires
-Carbon black and silica: used as a reinforcing agent to improve durability
-Metallic and textile reinforcement cables: the "skeleton" of the tire, forming the geometric shape and providing rigidity
-Numerous chemical agents: for unique properties like low rolling resistance or ultra-high grip
- Michelin designs several different tires and uses simulations to test and select the best tire concepts.
- They build each tire both hand-made and automated. And they invent their own machines when necessary.
- With over 1 billion miles worth of testing each year, you can bet they put out a quality tire that you can count on.
Their typical tire consist of eight main parts: inner liner, carcass ply, lower bead area, beads, sidewall, crown plies (belts), cap ply (“zero degree” belt), and the tread. These parts provide safety, efficiency, performance, and traction to your vehicle and make any drive a safe drive. It also saves you money, helps your car drive smoothly, and can keep the noise inside your car down.
